Dorothy Zbornak is the divorced substitute teacher, Rose Nylund is the naīve and ingenious widow grief counselor, Blanche Devereaux is another widow with sex foremost in her mind and Sophia Petrillo, Dorothy's octogenarian mother who had lost her 'tact cells' after a stroke and has the habit of speaking her mind most of the time and thus creates quite a few embarrassing situations.
