Golden Girls characters-real life performance
The characters that played in the
hit TV series 'The Golden Girls' were all charming and lovable.
Viewers not only appreciated their performances but also idolized the
stars. Each role was important and the actresses performed in perfect
unison. The result was that Golden Girls became an all time hit TV
show which is still viewed by people worldwide. The characters were
that of Dorothy, Sophia (Dorothy's mother), Rose and Blanche. The
four actresses who enacted these characters peaked in their
performances in this particular TV show. However in the later years
after this show was over they could not create the same magic again.
Golden Girls premiered on the 14th
of September 1985 with its very first episode 'The Engagement'. The
show went on till May 9 1992 when it was taken off air and
discontinued though it is still being aired today by some select TV
channels. The lead roles were played by Bea Arthur, Betty White, Rue
McClanahan and Estelle Getty. It was produced by Touchstone
Television and distributed by Buena Vista Television.
The Golden Girls episodes were all
hits and viewers never found the episodes boring though there were
repetitions. The credit for this goes both to the characters that
held on their powerful performances and the topics that were chosen
for each episode. The topics centered round controversial subjects of
those days like gay marriage, menopause, impotence, drug addiction,
infidelity, interracial marriage, transsexualism, homophobia,
cross-dressing, lesbianism, artificial insemination, sexual
harassment, senility etc.
Coming to the episodes there was one
titled 'Sick and tired', where Dorothy was fantastic in portraying
her frustration because she was suffering from fatigue and lethargy.
Her frustration increases more when the doctors were unable to
diagnose her illness. Then there were two other episodes namely
'Dancing in the dark' and 'Clinton Avenue Memoirs' notable for the
performance of Rose and Dorothy respectively. Rose delivered a great
performance in 'Dancing in the dark' when she gives up trying to
adjust with the high profile intellectual friends of her boyfriend.
Similarly 'Clinton Avenue Memoirs' episode has Dorothy who shows her
hopelessness at her mother Sophia's utter forgetfulness. Both these
episodes had many hilarious scenes.
