Learn more about the famous Golden Girls characters

The 80's boasts of quite a few television shows that are worth watching even now. Examples are the Fall Guy, Miami Vice and the all time favorite, The Golden Girls. The Golden Girls is a beautiful TV series that revolves round the lives of four older women, who live in the same house in Miami, Florida.

With these women coming from different backgrounds, and not actually knowing each other before living together, the TV series shows how much they go through to adjust at living with each other.

Introduction to the four Golden Girls characters

Though there are four women as the prime Golden Girls characters, the show starts with three women sharing a house in Miami. The owner of the house is a widow, Blanche Devereaux who is played by Rue McClanahan.

She is later joined by two other women, a widow, Rose Nylund who is played by Betty White and a divorcee by name Dorothy Zbornak, who is played by Bea Arthur. These two women had actually come to know about Blanche's house after having responded to a room for rent ad that was placed on the bulletin board of a local grocery store.

It was the burning down of the nursing home, Shady Pines, where Dorothy's mother, Sophia Petrillo was living that lead to her joining her daughter in this lovely home in Miami. Sophia Petrillo was played by Estelle Getty.

The gay housekeeper

There was an addition to Golden Girls characters in the pilot episode of The Golden Girls, a gay housekeeper by name Coco, played by Charles Levin. However he was dropped from the show after the pilot show.

It is interesting to know that Sophia was actually supposed to be a recurring role in The Golden Girls. However her popularity made the script writers change the script of Golden Girls to include her as a main character.

It was her ability and knack at using the zingers and one liners that were originally meant for Coco of The Golden Girls characters that earned her a permanent slot in The Golden Girls.
